Advanced Driver

What is Advanced Driving?

Advanced driving is a proactive, systematic approach that goes beyond basic test standards, focusing on planning, awareness, and control to make driving safer, smoother, and more efficient. It is built around the System of Car Control (IPSGA), developed from police driving methods and used by IAM RoadSmart. This approach emphasises thinking well ahead, anticipating hazards early, and positioning the vehicle to maximise safety and visibility at all times.

IPSGA is central to advanced driving and provides a structured way to handle every situation: Information (continuous observation, mirror use, and communication), Position (placing the car for best safety and view), Speed (adjusting appropriately to conditions and hazards), Gear (choosing the correct gear for control), and Acceleration (applying smooth and safe progress). By following this sequence, drivers create a clear, repeatable system that ensures hazards are identified early and dealt with in a controlled, logical way.

Core principles include observation and anticipation, smoothness, and defensive driving—aiming to avoid risks rather than react to them. The benefits are significant: improved safety, better fuel efficiency, reduced vehicle wear, and increased driver confidence in all conditions. Advanced driving is suitable for any full licence holder, whether newly qualified or experienced, and is widely regarded as the gold standard for safe, responsible driving.
